German Environmentalists Call for Lowered EMF Exposure Guidelines for Cell Phones and Cell Towers

German environmentalists call for lowered EMF exposure guidelines for cell phones and cell towers, citing several studies showing evidence of biological harm from cell phones and from cell towers, including the ECOLOG Report (link), which was commissioned by Deutsche Telecom itself. This report showed “evidence of birth defects in animals, sleep disorders, endocrine disruption and cancer-promoting effects associated with the use of cell phones”, according to the IT News article August 21, 2011.

They are calling for exposure to be reduced from 2 Watts per square meter to 0.5 Watts per square meter, something that is technologically doable.

They are also calling for certain areas to be entirely free from cell towers, such as residential areas, schools and kindergartens.

According to yet another IT News article, undated, telecom companies are warning against “alarmism” regarding cell phone radiation. The article, translated into English, quotes one person from a consortium of telecom companies stating that of some 3,000 studies “not one of them has proven a hazard to health”, an entirely misleading statement. The group, called the mobile information center, is an industry initiative by mobile operator E-Plus Group 3G, Mobilcom (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: MOB), T-Mobil, Viag Interkom, Mannesmann Mobilfunk and trunked radio network operator Dolphin Telecom.

They claim alarmists are confusing people about risks. Activists claim the telecom industry is confusing people about risks.
