Union of Concerned Scientists – How Corporations Corrupt Science at the Public’s Expense
A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, “Heads They Win, Tails We Lose,” describes the problem of political interference in federal science and how companies with a financial stake in the outcome are allowed to influence the very scientific research used by policy makers.
The report discusses some of the most common ways corporations influence both the research and policy making processes, including corruption of the science itself, shaping of public perception, restricting agency effectiveness, influencing congress and exploiting judicial pathways.
The Union of Concerned Scientists was established in 1969, originally as a collaboration between students and faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is now a leading science-based nonprofit aiming to use independent scientific research and citizen action to encourage changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices toward a healthier environment and a safer world.
