Alzheimer’s Mouse Study – Do We Smell a Rat?

Recently a study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggesting electromagnetic field exposure may be beneficial to mice bred to have Alzheimer’s disease (Gary Arendash et al, Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Vol 19, page 191-210, 2010). Researcher are intrigued with these results but highly disturbed that the PR around this announcement said the exposure was equivalent to cell phone radiation, which it was not, and that the study in mice might be relevant to humans, which is not substantiated by the study. Headlines around the world thus misled millions, and possibly hundreds of millions, of people. People exposed to this news blizzard now think that long-term use of cell phones is good for our brains. As you will read in “Alzheimer’s Mouse Study—Do We Smell a Rat?”, the science does not support this.
Of note is that biological effects and heating were observed at a power level (SAR value) of only 0.25 W/kg. This is very significant because the cell phone industry, as well as regulators, claim cellphones are not harmful if the SAR level is 1.6 W/kg or lower. If replicated, this study may be an important turning point where it becomes clear to regulators that exposure guidelines for wireless radiation from cell phones should be made more strict than they are today.
Another finding in this investigation was that two employees of the University of South Florida with deep experience in the wireless industry were technical advisers to the study. One was formerly an R&D employee at Ericsson. Neither of these gentlemen were listed as investigators, so no conflict of interest disclosure statements were necessary.
