Mice Exposed to Cell Phone Radiation Exhibit Memory Deficits
A.F. Fragopouloua et al of the University of Athens, Dept of Cell Biology and Biophysics, has a new paper in press to be published by Pathophysiology. The paper is called “Whole body exposure with GSM 900 MHz Affects Spatial Memory in Mice”.
The Athens team applied a 2-hour daily dose of pulsed GSM 900 MHz radiation from a commercially available mobile phone for 4 days at SAR values ranging from 0.41 to 0.98W/kg. Statistical analysis revealed that during learning, exposed animals showed a deficit in transferring the acquired spatial information across training. These exposures were at non-thermal levels of radiation exposure, levels the FCC and other international regulatory bodies claim are not harmful because there is no heating effect. The mice showed deficits in consolidation and/or retrieval of the learned spatial information at these non-thermal levels of exposure. This is consistent with report of cognitive deficits in some individuals who use mobile phones. The authors recommend more thorough investigation of non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
Watch Mice in the Morris Water Maze Test Have Difficulty Finding The Sunken Platform after Exposure to Cell Phone Radiation for 2 Hours:
VIDEO 1. CONTROL MOUSE IN THE MORRIS WATER MAZE – LEARNING TEST SESSION.
Mice were trained to find a submerged escape platform, located in a fixed position. The video shows a control mouse that finds the platform very easily.
VIDEO 2. MOBILE PHONE IRRADIATED MOUSE IN THE MORRIS WATER MAZE – LEARNING TEST SESSION.
Mice were trained to find a submerged escape platform, located in a fixed position. This is an irradiated mouse that spends more time to find the platform.
VIDEO 3. CONTROL MOUSE IN THE MORRIS WATER MAZE – PROBE TRIAL SESSION.
Memory probe trial – performed two hours after the last training trial – of the hidden version of the Morris water maze. This is a control mouse that remembers the position of the platform and swims over to it.
VIDEO 4. MOBILE PHONE IRRADIATED MOUSE IN THE MORRIS WATER MAZE – PROBE TRIAL SESSION.
Memory probe trial -performed two hours after the last training trial- of the hidden version of the Morris water maze. This is an irradiated mouse that does not seem to remember the position of the platform and swims around.
People exposed to microwave radiation from cellphones, wireless networks and citywide Wi-Fi complain of cognitive difficulties ranging from attention problems, difficulty focusing, poor memory, visual and hearing disruptions, headaches, dizziness, depression and foggy thinking. A growing body of research exists validating health effects from microwave radiation at non-thermal levels of exposure. More research is certainly needed so we can understand the full scope of microwave radiation’s impact on mental health.
